Join us for a webinar hosted by the Maghreb Action for Displacement And Rights (MADAR) Network Plus.
To mark the end of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, this webinar will shed light on gender-based violence in the context of migration and forced displacement, within the Greater Maghreb region. Panelists will provide an overview of the situation of migrant women and girls in Tunisia, Libya and Morocco and present different examples of initiatives and projects that have contributed to preventing violence against migrant women and girls in the region.
The panel, chaired by Marwen Bounab, will include the following speakers:
Amera Markous (International Detention Coalition, MENA Regional Coordinator): Amera is a humanitarian researcher focusing on migration. She has worked with UNHCR and other international organizations in Libya on humanitarian programmes, later she did her masters on Humanitarian Action from University of Geneva and focused on research on migration in the region. She then worked with the Mixed Migration Centre (MMC) North Africa where she was responsible on coordinating data collection activities across Libya as well as managing a research project on the impact of COVID-19 on EU migration policies in the Mediterranean.
Asma Hedi Nairi (International Detention Coalition, MENA Regional Programme Officer): Asma is a Tunisian lawyer and researcher and has a PhD in cultural anthropology. She previously worked with several international and regional organisations, including with Amnesty International Tunisia and layer In Turkey, she worked with UNHCR and other organizations on livelihood programmes for refugees. Her academic work includes acting as a guest lecturer with the African Foundation and Istanbul Istinye University, delivering courses related to migration studies, research methodologies, and African studies. Most recently, she conducted research on the African diaspora in Turkey, focusing on the impact of media discourse on community experiences and social integration.
Nyabang Otto: Originally from South Sudan, Nya is a human rights activist and an intersectional feminist based in Morocco. In 2022, she founded "Collectif des Jeunes Femmes Migrantes Solidaires", an initiative that promotes inclusion, resilience, as well as solidarity among migrant women of sub-Saharan origin in Morocco. Nya is committed to the collective emancipation of migrant women so that they pass from being recipients of assistance to actors capable of demanding their rights.
Monia MAHDHI (Community Based Protection Supervisor, Tunisia Refugee Council): Monia Mahdhi is a Community Based Protection Supervisor at the Tunisian Refugee Council, the implementing partner of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She holds a Masters Degree in Cultural and Tourism Communication and has been involved in the Humanitarian field since 2018 where she gained experience in working with refugees, persons with specific needs or children at risk of violence or neglect. She works directly with communities to leverage their capacities for community-based protection by providing support to community-owned activities to address social, educational, psycho-social, cultural, health and organizational concerns.
Interpretation:
Presentations will be in French and English and simultaneous interpretation will be available throughout the event. Presentations of 10-15 minutes each will be followed by a Q&A session.

The Tunisian Refugee Council is an active humanitarian organization in the field of asylum . it was established on June 28th, 2016, by the initiative of Mr Mustapha Djemali, former Regional Director at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and certain members representing the various sectors of the Tunisian civil society, to help manage issues relating to asylum in Tunisia and to support the Tunisian authorities in their efforts to find appropriate solutions to the difficulties encountered by refugees in Tunisia.
Collectif des Jeunes Femmes Migrantes Solidaires :
Created on July 31, 2016, the collective of migrant women in Morocco aims to improve the situation of migrant women in Morocco. The main objective of the association is to make migrant women capable of doing an activity and being autonomous. The association focuses its interventions on two areas:
Professional training, and
Orientation of women for the granting of birth certificates.
The association aims to :
* Support and defend the rights of migrant women in Morocco
* To guide and raise awareness among women in the field of reproductive health
