Due to its geographic position, Algeria is at the crossroads of population movements from south to north. Algeria is no longer just a country of transit for people wishing to settle in Europe; it has also become a host country which must seriously play this role with greater responsibility and initiate profound social transformations in society, its perceptions, representations and behaviour to ensure that these people and communities, very often living in precarious conditions and poverty, can be welcomed with more humanity and dignity and enable them to live decently by facilitating their integration into society. They are often young people who can bring added value to the country and carry out an activity in a win-win relationship.

Migrant women remain a weak link, they suffer verbal, physical and sexual violence throughout their migratory journey and also in the country, sometimes by those who are supposed to protect them. They are stigmatised and discriminated against in the same way as Algerian women sex workers. This common vulnerability should enable a common strategy to be put in place to fight against stigma and discrimination. Access to prevention, care and comprehensive psychological, medical, economic, legal, cultural and social support as close as possible to these populations in the territories of Oran and Bechar is likely to reduce the risk factors of violence, STIs, HIV and AIDS, illnesses and psychotrauma, but also and above all to bring about the changes needed to promote the integration of these women in vulnerable situations into Algerian society. A society where the weight of taboos, prohibitions, concealment and racism does not allow these women to live together in a win-win relationship.

The proposed action is a research intervention that will contribute to improving the health of women in vulnerable situations, facilitating access to income generating activities for women in vulnerable situations and promoting the integration of women in vulnerable situations into Algerian society.

Objectives:

  • Improve the health of women in vulnerable situations.
  • Facilitate access to income-generating activities for women in vulnerable situations

The project will set up a reception and orientation space for migrant women in Bechar to strengthen access to health services; train community liasons; analyse data collected from the centre's activities and related actors and produce a project archive; and create a documentary to showcase the reception and orientation space.
